"All set!" Karla gave the thumbs up as she stood below on stage. Rehearsals were grueling, but everyone had to do them. At this rate, it wouldn’t be much longer until they got everything squared away. Right before Karla got on stage, the speakers had blown out from the last band, so the technical crew was taking their sweet time fixing the problem. The sound people had just gotten finished hooking Karla’s microphone up and getting her earpiece in. She adjusted the brand new Ray Ban aviators that graced her face as the sun was blinding across the set. The black fedora she had worn only moments before sat upright at the edge of the stage.
Karla snapped her fingers, waiting for this entire hullabaloo to be over and done with. Rocking back on her black Van sneakers, Karla scanned the horizon. They were outside in the middle of the afternoon, rehearsing the newest number, The Second Time Tonight. It was a recent song that the whole band had written just a few weeks before, taking their time. It was either one thing or the other; the melody was wrong, no one was on beat or they started in the wrong places. But eventually the band had gotten it together and produced what they hoped was another hit.
A pair of black booty looking shorts hugged Karla’s bottom half with a somewhat large white printed tunic covered her top half, a turquoise camisole peeking out. Her hair was a complete mess and she decided to just put it up in a messy bun, tendrils and bangs spilling out around her cheekbones. Karla had no make up on and her lips were starting to chap. A production assistant handed her some moisturizing chap stick and went on his merry way. Ever since Karla and Star Crush had gotten here, she’d been a little concerned. Were they going to be a hit? Would everything go off without a hitch? Would those stupid reporters quit stalking them? That last question had no answer.
The reporters had been hounding her forever about anything and everything. Was she on medication, who’s dating who, is the band breaking up. Everything was starting to piss her off to no end. The black mike stand stood there, with her signature white microphone with its crystals on it. It was a special microphone, in the fact that it had new and improved sound quality, but as well her father had given it to her the day she left for the tour. Her family promised to come to the first show. That made Karla nervous.
She looked over at her manager, who was, of course, stuck to the Blackberry. Again. Karla made a silent groan as she looked back up at the sound guy. He was still tinkering away. She thought about just stepping off stage and into the shade, at least there she wouldn’t be getting sunburn or an uneven tan for that matter. Tapping her foot, Karls tried to wait patiently. They were already behind schedule and the next band would be there in less than forty minutes. Karla wanted to ask if they could come back later. It was getting to the point where they couldn’t wait any longer.
If only the speakers hadn’t blown out. Then maybe they wouldn’t be behind. The music was already down, but Karla still hadn’t done the vocals and time was running out. They needed to fix the sound and fast. However fast would go, these people needed to be faster.

"Sounds like Star Crush is having some sound issues, better go help," Jayce said to everybody in the tour bus that was temporarily parked behind the main stage. Jayce often helped the sound crew when they couldn't do things on their own. She knew a lot about what happened backstage too with all that technical junk since she'd had to do her own sound when she was an independent looking for a band to join. She walked out into the brisk San Diego afternoon and walked the ways toward the sound booth at the top of the arena seating.
The sound manager was clearly frustrated and the rest of the crew up there was trying to figure things out as well. "Alright everybody let me do this junk since you can't." The crew up in the booth basically had informed her that there were problems with the new microphone. Karla's revamped signature mic was causing problems with the speaker. The advanced sound quality was too much for the speakers up on stage and might blow the sound with the levels that had been set on the sound board. Luckily this was just a case of changing some chords and switching sound levels. How simple could it get? Jayce sat down in front of the equipment and moved the dials on the switchboard around, reducing and increasing certain effects and sounds. It seemed nobody bothered to re calibrate the system after integrating a new piece of equipment. Idiots. Who hired these people anyways?
Jayce put on the headset on and hoped Karla had her pitch aid on. She pushed the button and spoke into the headset's mic. "Hey Karla, it's Jayce, do me a favor and test the mic so I can see if the new adjustments are a little less hard on the speakers, thanks." Jayce took her finger off the button and adjusted the volume on the headset. First she would get the mic integrated into the system, then she'd work out the sound with the rest of the instruments. Maybe then she could hand it over to the sound people who were supposed to be doing the job she was apparently better at.

Speak of the devil. Although Karla had to admit she was pretty relieved when she heard Jayce in her ear. The girl certainly knew what she was doing. And if anyone knew what was wrong with the speakers, it was Jayce. She would help the crew from time to time, Karla knew that, but there was also something else about Jayce, something that neither of them liked to talk about. "Testing, testing, 1,2,3." Karla said into the mic. She had her fingers crossed that everything would work and they could rehearse.
If not, they’d have to wait until the band after them was finished before they could really rehearse again, with everything fixed. Karla wondered if maybe it had something to do with the new microphone. She hadn’t been the one to make the changes, her manager did. They thought that a higher sound quality or something like that would be better for all the bands, and each were supposed to be testing out new equipment today.
Hopefully none of the other bands would have the same problem. Then the producers and everyone else would probably be pretty furious. Really furious. The record label would freak, the press would have a field day. That would be hell on earth. Literally. That was a fate worse than getting fired or going back home. But there was no time to think about that, oh no. Star Crush was to go on second tonight and if the equipment didn’t get fixed, there’s no telling what would happen.
Karla waited patiently to see what would happen. If they had to cancel the rehearsal, then there was nothing they could do. They would have to cancel. And there was no way they would be able to go on tonight if they don’t know the new song. Nothing was going to happen until the word was given. Which Karla hoped wasn’t bad.

Jayce nodded to herself and adjusted a few more things on the board. Luckily everybody used the same mic settings and reverb tones on the tour so once she got Karla's mic set up, the settings would apply for the rest of the bands on tour. All they'd have to do is switch mics, but that wasn't an issue. That was the simple task of just plugging something else. The good thing about working on the tour was the technical stuff was relatively easy. Plus, if it wasn't people made sure they got their shit done or the tour staff would go ballistic on everybody, and nobody wanted that. "Thanks Karla. The sound's fine if nobody up here messes with anything. Looks to me like the speakers are going to be fine. I'm just gonna ask you to sing a bit so I can adjust the sensitivity of your new mic so we don't get any feedback?".
Jayce had to admit if it was anybody else she would have just come up to help a little and shove herself out of the soundbooth because she figured they could figure it out on their own, but she knew Karla well, and even if they weren't the most friendly to each other, she figured it was just immature to leave the girl to her own devices. Jayce was one to hold a grudge, but her period of vindictiveness was over. She wouldn't make Karla's life shit just because of the incident.
Nevertheless she was on tour with her and bad blood would mean horrible business for the tour. The two of them would have to at least maintain a working relationship in order to at least make the tour livable for them, and everybody else, because a problem between the two of them didn't just involve them. Bands and crews get involved with drama too, since everybody's basically like a family anyway. That was part of the good and bad things about being in a band. You get friends, family, fun, but you also get everybody else's baggage, and that can sometimes be a problem.
Jayce didn't really have any baggage beside the crap that'd happened with Karla and the fact that she replaced a lead singer and fans of Yesterdays News were a little warry of her taking over. They were all afraid that she's gonna change the band's sound, bring unwanted fan base, and the new rumor was that she'd been abusing prescription drugs. Jayce didn't appreciate the term abusing. It wasn't like she wanted to take them, and she wasn't getting high off of them. She just had a lot of medicine she had to take, and because she was slowly getting m ore famous, it'd become harder to hide. She didn't worry too much though. Her secret was safe with her and nobody else. Now, she was just trying to help out the sound people, and enjoy the tour.

Karla nodded to Jayce, and sang a little, hitting a simple A note. "Ohhh...Ohhhh...The Second Time...The Second Time Toniighttttt...."She stood back from the microphone and waited. If she and Jayce were going to live through this tour, they’d have to keep it on a professional level, being civilized to each other.
That wasn’t hard or anything, but remembering what happened with Jayce, that was just so hard to think about. It was a complete disaster. Not that either of them even liked to talk about it. Whenever someone asked, Karla just got so angry all over again. Then whoever had asked didn’t ask again, after Karla explained to them what happened. But that was not going to come up now, crew and the other bands would get in the middle, trying to help. Even though they would mean well, nothing would ever help and that’s the way it had always been.
But Karla wasn’t going to make a scene, that would be rude and that’s stooping to a whole new level of immature, which Karla was above. The sound seemed to be coming along, which was good. She couldn’t complain there. Even if someone she didn’t like had to help her, it was good anyway. Karla smoothed her tunic and adjusted the mic stand.
Her band mates were patiently waiting next to and behind her. She took a sip of her room temperature water. It may sound like a bad idea to most, especially in this weather, but if she even drank cold water, her vocal chords would be screwed. Rule number one of any singer.
Karla took a deep breath and let it out. This would be okay. Everything was going well. Stuff was getting fixed and they weren’t loosing too much rehearsal time. The bands’ manager popped on stage, telling them something that even though Karla was nodding and seemingly sounding find with, she so wasn’t. In fact she was far from it, she was shocked and surprised. Star Crush would be collaborating with another band for a song.

Karla's voice rang out through the speakers as Jayce adjusted the levels a little more before just to be sure. Once satisfied with her adjustments Jayce got onto the headset once again and pushed the red button on the side of the ear phone. "Hey Karla, we're all set here. Sounds good, you're ready to go." And Jayce was done. She slid the chair back and gave it back to whoever had been running sound before. She got up and gave the crew in the sound booth a good stare. "Now these settings are good for the rest of the tour, don't fuck them up or I'll have to fix them again. If you need to make adjustments then make them, but make sure you know what's going to happen when you do," she told them, trying to be serious but not rude. She knew she could be a little intimidating at times, given the fact that she was tall and covered in ink.
With a last check on things, Jayce left the sound booth and made her way back down the arena seating in front of the main stage. Star Crush was just going through normal sound check runs and the sound was good coming down the stage area. Jayce hoped that the sound guys wouldn't mess anything else up. When Jayce was independent she didn't have to deal with this kind of junk, but she almost liked being in a band better than on her own. As a pure vocalist she was stuck with tracks and stuff she didn't write. She wasn't a singer song writer, that was other people with better success. She had to admit though that her ride with the band was awesome. People were noticing her, and sure the paparazzi and the rumors weren't awesome, but when you got past that it was pretty great. She and the band were gaining popularity and fame and she knew that as well as they were doing, it could only get better.
With a smile Jayce passed the main stage and Star Crush doing their rehearsal. "Good luck tonight, Karla," Jayce said to her former friend with a wave, which was the most interaction they'd had face to face in a while. Shoving her hands in her back pockets she continued towards the tour bus feeling pretty alright.

Karla waved back, "Thanks, you too." Karls had to admit that was the most interaction the girls have had in a while. A long while. She turned back and the crew gave her a thumbs up. The band started to play and she stepped up to the mic and started on the new material, a hard song, Running From Forever. It had taken a while for Karla to write it, this one was personal, very perosnal.
As she watched Jayce walk away, she coudln't help but wonder what would happen tonight. How everything would go. What everyone would sound like. Would there be more problems? Lots was running through her mind. Everything was running through her mind. Karla hoped everything would go well at the performace. She prayed for all the bands to do well the night before. She didn't wish ill will on anyone.
Karla hit the first note well, considering it was a little hard. The last one, however, would be harder. A c note. A high note. It came right before the last chorus. Karla hadn't it one in a while and knew that she had to prepare. she had been for months. If she screwed up even one line her voice would be damaged and she would have to go on possible vocal rest and Star Crush would probably not be happy thaty they wouldn't be performing because of their lead singer. Rehearsal continued, with lots more work.
